Over a 50-year career as an entrepreneur, corporate attorney and venture capitalist, George Weiss has successfully participated in numerous national and international industry sectors with innovation and leadership. The consistent result: lasting impact.
Weiss participated in the launch or early development of over 30 companies, ranging from his early success in founding The National Reflector Corp, which pioneered the placement of reflectors in highway guard rails, to his participation in firms and fields including early cable television, direct marketing, banking, sports technology and marketing, music recording, digital security, data storage, media services, real estate development, on-line education and drug testing. Weiss also co-founded a predecessor of American Tower Corp., the largest radio communications tower company in the world. He led the financing and management of this firm, Bowen Smith Corp., which had 32 towers when acquired by Weiss’ group. The result, after a number of equity and debt financings and the sale of control over 12 years, was the formation of American Tower Corp., which currently owns and/or manages over 69,000 tower facilities and properties internationally and enjoys a NYSE valuation of over $36 billion.
The founder and CEO of Beechtree Capital, with activities based in New York City, Silicon Valley, Sedona and Scottsdale AZ, Weiss participated in more than 80 equity transactions over 20 years with a high success rate. He has served as a member of boards of directors and numerous executive, audit and other committees of more than 20 private and NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ companies and not-for-profit institutions.
Of particular interest are Weiss’ 45 years of continuous service, as counsel, board and committee member and board vice chair of the 63-year old highly respected National Football Foundation (NFF). George is the 2014 recipient of the NFF’s 2014 Gold Medal, the institution’s highest award, which he shares with 57 predecessor honorees including seven U.S. Presidents, a US Supreme Court Justice and numerous governmental and Fortune 100 leaders.
Prior to founding and leading Beechtree Capital, LLC, Weiss practiced corporate law in New York City with the Rubin, Baum, Levin, Constant & Friedman firm, which upon merger became the New York City division of Dentons, one of the world’s largest law firms. His primary areas of practice were venture capital, institutional debt and equity financings, telecommunications, banking, sports and entertainment. In the entertainment world, he represented numerous television and music personalities including Grammy winners and the development of singing and recording artists, including Madonna.
